Organic Spring Salad Mix Sprouting Seeds

Organic Spring Salad Mix package of sprouting seeds consists of a wonderful blend of broccoli, radish, red clover, and alfalfa. They are easy to grow, tasty, and packed with nutritional benefits!

Simple Sprouting Instructions:

  • SOAK– Put 1 to 2 Tbsp. seed in a wide mouth jar. Cover with mesh and secure with rubber band. Add water, swirl, and drain. Add 1 cup cool water and soak for 2 to 3 hours. Drain well.
  • RINSE – Twice a day, refill jar with cool water, swirl, and drain. Invert jar and prop at an angle in a sink or bowl.
  • ENJOY – Ready to eat in 3 to 5 days. Refrigerate to store. (Sprouts can be refrigerated for up to two weeks in a sealed container. (Sprouts store best when they are fairly dry- do not store immediately after rinsing.)

Seed Storage:

Our seeds should sprout well for a year after you purchase them, if stored in a cool dry place. If you’d like to extend the germination life of your seeds, store them in the fridge.

About Organic Seeds
What are organic seeds? Organic seed is an unaltered seed that comes from a purely raised plant with no genetic modification and that has not been affected by chemical applications or additives. Because organic growers are not permitted to use synthetic pesticides on their plants, the plants naturally become adapted to withstand pests and other natural enemies such as harsh weather. They have to, in order to defend themselves. When the organic seed is used, the plants have that intrinsic strength.

A unique and wonderful blend of peas, fava beans, buckwheat and sunflower. You will love how well this blend grows together. A great lettuce replacement during winter months! ‘

  • Days to Sprout 8-10
  • Soak Time 4-8 HOURS
  • Storage Our seeds should sprout well for a year after you purchase them, if stored in a cool dry place. If you’d like to extend the germination life of your seeds, store them in the fridge. If you store your seeds in the freezer, they’ll last even longer!

How to Grow Microgreens:

  1. Find a south-facing window with plenty of sunlight or install an inexpensive growlight. I’ve found that a growlight mounted under kitchen cabinets works perfectly for growing greens on the counter if you have the space to do it. In warmer months, these can also be easily grown outside.
  2. Place an inch of organic potting soil in the bottom of a shallow tray or planted tray with or without drainage holes and smooth out to be as even as possible. Alternately, clear an area of your garden or get creative.
  3. Scatter seeds over the surface of the soil evenly. You will spread more seeds than you would if just planting the seeds to grow to full size, since they will only get 1-2 inches tall and you want to harvest as many as possible from each tray. TIP: Soaking the seeds overnight will speed sprouting time, but make it more difficult to scatter them. You may need to soak your seeds first.
  4. Cover the seeds with a thin layer of soil and spray the surface with clean, filtered water. I use an upcycled glass vinegar bottle with a misting spray top.
  5. Place on the warming mat, if using, and under the grow light or near the window to allow for them to start to grow.
  6. Mist the seeds a couple of times a day to keep the soil evenly moist while waiting to see the seed starting.
  7. Greens are usually ready to harvest in 2-4 weeks, depending on the type of seed used.
  8. To grow another crop, either remove the roots and replant or dump the entire tray in the compost and fill with more soil to replant. If you dump in the compost, some straggler seeds usually volunteer and make a crop of their own a few weeks later.

Benefits: Wheatgrass contains vitamins C and E, β-carotene, ferulic acid and vanillic acid.

Chlorophyll, one of the active components in the wheatgrass extract, helps cleanse the body, speeds up wound healing, improves digestion and weight control and protects skin health.

Parts used: fresh leaves

Primary activities: antioxidant, nutritive, depurative, natural source of chlorophyll.

How to use it: Around 5/10 freshly sprouted leaves (3 grams, approximately) daily could be eaten directly, into a salad or into a fresh juice or extract.

Broccoli sprouts have just recently become popular after it was discovered there are many nutritional benefits of broccoli sprouts. These cruciferous vegetables are plentiful with cancer-fighting phytochemicals, and sulforaphane.

Research studies have shown that they contain 50 times more sulforaphane than fresh broccoli. What’s more, these sprouted seeds contain glucosinolates and isothiocyanates, substances that protect cells from becoming malignant, at 10-100 times greater levels than in mature broccoli. In addition, they are sources of plant estrogens, similar to human estrogen, and so among other health benefits, are helpful in cases of menopause, hot flashes, and fibrocystic disease. Add them to your meal plan and eat broccoli sprouts just as you would real food.

Nutrient-dense, they are rich sources of vitamins A, B, C, E, and K, anti-oxidants, the minerals calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, and zinc. Also carotene, chlorophyll, amino acids, trace elements, and antioxidants. Broccoli sprouts contain as much as 35% protein.

You can grow them at home in a mason jar or sprouting jar with sprouting lids and watch the sprouting process unfold before your eyes. Rinse and drain two times a day. Harvest and eat raw. Not available in grocery stores.
